So let’s begin!

How to plan a website structure?

Person Scan

When you landed on an unfamiliar web page, before start reading the whole content, you decide, Is it worthy to invest your time to read the blog content?  Here your personal scanning plays important role. You analyze the complete content with some important points and then decide to read the complete blog. Some major points where you focused on during your personal scanning are:

  • First Paragraph
  • Headings and Subheadings
  • Comments
  • Website appearance
  • Author biography (If blog is new)
  • Media, etc.

If you are giving importance to these points then Google will also give importance to these points. Wondering why? Answer is very clear; the ultimate goal of Google is to present the most relevant content in front of the user so that it can satisfy the users search intent.

If website passes the personal scan exam of user then bounce rate of your website will improve considerably which eventually affects the ranking of your web page on the SERP.

So next time when you write a blog go through your competitor’s website in an unbiased manner and observe your personal scan behavior on that website, write down those points where you was focused during your personal scan and on your blog give some extra care on those points.

Use Categories

If bounce rate of your website is high then add category page in the menu section of your website. As per my experience, you will notice significance improvement in the bounce rate of your website. The reason behind this is quite obvious; a category page of your website serves the most relevant information to your users which they are looking for.

Category page also helps you to manage multiple pages of your website. You can refer any popular e-commerce website to understand how to manage your web pages with category?

Breadcrumbs improve user experience because it helps to navigate users in your website if they are lost and looking for a relevant web page. Good user experience means lower bounce rate.

Internal linking

Internal linking (Connecting all your relevant web pages together with hyperlinks) plays a very important role during the planning of website structure.

A good internal linking helps your website to grow in the following manner:

  • Improve user experience
  • Reduces bounce rate
  • Improve crawling
  • Distribute page authority
  • Gives clue of valuable web pages of your website
  • Increase page/session, etc.

People generally think, connecting relevant web pages with hyperlinks is good enough for internal linking. But that’s not true.

Internal linking should be done in a particular format. So, that Google crawl on all your web pages which are connecting through internal linking.

In a day, search engine crawlers have to crawl on billions of pages. So, Google assign a limited crawl budget to your website. With this limited crawl budget you have to work smartly so that you can make the crawler crawl on your most important pages.

If you have limited pages on your website then you can easily request for indexing in the Google search console but if your website has more than 500 pages then you have to plan proper internal linking website architecture.

I personally use following techniques for internal linking:

  • First of all, I create a pillar content or category pages and create some supporting articles then through internal linking I provide link to my pillar content so that Google crawler crawls on that particular pillar content of my website each time.
  • Never make unnecessary linking to unimportant web pages of your website. Like Contact Us, Tags etc.
  • Make sure, none of your web page is more that 3 clicks away from the home page.
  • Use proper relevant anchor text

Why it is important? Updating old pages of your website is important because if you will not do so then as the time passes your website will have a low performing page which is not good from SEO point of view.
